Global plastic production has dramatically increased in recent decades, leading to significant environmental problems, especially due to marine and soil pollution. A sustainable solution lies in the development of biodegradable plastics. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are natural storage compounds produced by bacteria and offer an environmentally friendly alternative to fossil-based plastics. Our research aims to develop economically viable and resource-efficient processes for the production of PHA from biogenic waste materials such as used cooking oils, thus making an active contribution to environmental and climate protection by reducing plastic waste.
The goal of this position is to pursue a PhD within the framework of a DFG-funded project on the bioprocess development of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) from used cooking oils. The research will be conducted in close collaboration with the Technische Universität Berlin. The work is embedded in an international research context, providing opportunities for global networking and the integration of cutting-edge scientific insights.
Responsibilities:
- Independent research in bioprocess engineering for the production of PHA biopolymers from used cooking oils as a sustainable alternative to fossil-based plastics
- Cultivation of Cupriavidus necator (formerly Ralstonia eutropha) (wild-type and recombinant strains) at laboratory and pilot scale.
- Development and optimization of fed-batch strategies for fat-rich substrates for PHA production
- Execution of high-cell-density fermentations (> 50 g/L)
- Control of monomer composition through the targeted use of suitable co-substrates
- Application of process analytical technology (PAT) for process monitoring and control
- Chromatographic analysis (HPLC, GC, GPC) of produced PHA polymers
