The workshop will take place online and on four Friday afternoons in October and November (see below).
Content
The online workshop Scientific Writing & Publishing conveys the know-how of scientific writing and publishing and creates a basis for long-term development of participants‘ scientific writing skills. Participants learn how to write a clear and well-structured research article efficiently and how to publish it successfully. To enable maximum possible transfer of learned skills, the trainer employs interactive and collaborative methods including writing sessions, reflections, peer feedback, practical exercises, and discussions with the group and in pairs. The course provides ample opportunities to tackle participants‘ individual questions and difficulties through frequent Q&A rounds as well as additional short video lectures on specialized topics.
Workshop objectives
• Participants learn how to produce clear and compelling scientific texts.
• Participants practice techniques for efficient drafting and revising of scientific texts.
• Participants understand the conventional structure of research articles and know how to apply it in their particular field.
• Participants understand readers‘ expectations and know how to use reader‘s perspective to communicate their research findings effectively.
• Participants learn to use writing as a support for their scientific thinking.
• Participants reflect upon their writing productivity and develop strategies for improvement.
• Participants learn to utilize peer feedback for effective revising.
The trainer
Dr. Martina Michalikova is a writing consultant for (young) scientists. She gave more than 60 scientific writing workshops and works with various national as well as international universities.
Module overview
October 11th, 1- 4 pm: Principles of scientific writing. Writing process & writing productivity.
October 25th, 1- 4 pm: Macrostructure of research articles.
November 15th, 1- 4 pm: Paragraph & sentence structure. Text flow. Scientific language & style.
November 29th , 1- 4 pm: Peer feedback. Publication processes.
The course will be held in English. In case of minor understanding problems: the trainer understands and speaks German.
In addition to the 4 workshop dates, you will receive homework to support you in consolidating the content. The total time required for the course is a maximum of 22 hours. After successful participation (online + homework) you will receive a certificate of attendance.
